The Girl Who Moved In With Her Grandmother and Started a Movement

The Girl Who Moved In With Her Grandmother and Started a Movement

September 29, 2026•4 min read

"I didn't know there was a term for what I was experiencing."

That's how Leena Albinali describes the moment everything started.

She was eleven. She was volunteering at the senior center her grandmother attended, doing small things. Pouring tea. Helping with crafts. Sitting with people who had lived seven, eight decades longer than she had.

She just knew those conversations mattered to her.

Then her family moved in with her grandmother, and something shifted. Living under the same roof is different than visiting on weekends. Leena started noticing the stories her grandmother told more than once, because she'd forgotten she'd already told them. The advice that came out sideways, in the middle of some other conversation, the kind of wisdom you only get from someone who has already lived the thing you're worried about.

Not because they didn't care. Because nobody had built a bridge.

That was the seed. And it landed in Leena right as she was joining Find Your Qibla, the summer before ninth grade. Which, if you're keeping track, means she came into Five Before College earlier than almost any student we've had. Eighth grade. Five years out. The actual name of our program lived out exactly as designed.

She didn't need FYQ to give her a passion. She already had one.

What she needed was a way to build it.

From a Podcast Idea to Something Real

The first version of Leena's project was called the Elder Wisdom Project.

She started volunteering. She started interviewing.

And then she noticed something.

The world doesn't need another thing on a screen.

Leena realized that most of us are already buried in our phones, scrolling through content instead of sitting across from a real person. A podcast, however good, was still just another digital product competing for attention that was already spread too thin.

So she changed direction.

What if the real power wasn't in recording the wisdom. What if it was in the room where the wisdom got shared.

Golden Connections

That pivot became Golden Connections, a club Leena founded at her own high school built to bring teenagers and seniors together in person.

It grew fast.

A pen pal program between students and seniors. Lunch and Learn roundtables where generations sat at the same table and actually talked to each other. The kind of programming that sounds simple on paper and is nearly impossible to pull off, because it requires people to show up and be present with each other in a culture that has mostly forgotten how.

Then it grew again.

Golden Connections received a grant from the MIT AgeLab to fund more thoughtful, structured intergenerational programming. Not a school club anymore. A recognized model.

InshAllah, Leena is presenting at a national conference on aging.

Eighth grade to MIT to a national stage. Because she followed something that started with her own grandmother and never let go of it.

What This Actually Says

I've sat with a lot of students over the years, and I'll tell you what I told Leena directly.

You're the poster child for what Five Before College is supposed to be.

Not because of the grant. Not because of the conference. Because of what happened in between.

That's the whole model.

We help teenagers explore who they are. We help them find out what they're truly passionate about. And then we push them to take that passion and turn it into something real, something we call a passion project.

Leena walked in with a feeling about her grandmother. She walked out with Golden Connections.

That's the process working exactly as it's meant to.

She built a bridge.

And now that bridge has MIT's name on it, and soon a national stage too.

May Allah continue to put khair and baraka in everything she does. She's proof of what happens when a fourteen year old girl pays attention to the person right in front of her instead of the feed in her hand.

inshAllah, there are a hundred more Leenas out there. Our job is just to help them see what they've already found.

Impact

Golden Connections didn't stay inside one high school for long. Here's where the story has already traveled.

A club that started with one girl and her grandmother is now showing up in national news, at conferences, and on panels built to change how this country thinks about generations.

That's baraka. It doesn't stay small.
